Open Gate graduate in 2010

I was born in Kolín and lived in Prague until age four. My life took a turn for the better right after I arrived at the Korkyně private children’s home. At age fifteen, I was admitted to the OPEN GATE Grammar School, from which I graduated successfully.

The school allowed me to develop and improve on my hobbies, which include English. English was more than just a school subject for me. Thanks to 100% financial support from The Kellner Family Foundation, I can now fulfill my dream – which has always been to study at an international university. So here I am in Bath, UK, a beautiful historical town just perfect for studying history, savoring university life to the fullest.

Studying Master’s degree in Bath

When I discovered the possibility to study a postgraduate course abroad, once again provided by The Kellner Family Foundation, I have felt the same feeling just like these wonderful three years back, when I was applying for the undergraduate course here in Bath. The feeling simply goes beyond words and I am Very grateful for having the opportunity to be and study here.

As I have mentioned in my previous blog entry, the final year is all about the dissertation. Whenever I come to library there are people working on it, some of them even sleep in the library if they need to.

It’s all about the dissertation

With the final year of uni ahead of me, there’s a lot of fun and new experiences to look forward to. Since I am in my third year now, I’m going to be working on my dissertation, which is equivalent to czech ‘Bakalářská práce.’I have chosen ‘The assassination of Reinhard Heydrich’ as my dissertation topic.

Collective preparation for exams

School is most difficult for me every time I come back after Easter holidays. It’s not just due to the many essays, presentations etc. Even though the Easter holidays were not as sunny this year, I enjoyed them to the fullest as always.

The Christmas holidays are over and I’m back in chilly Bath. I enjoyed my well-deserved days off as a student should, but relaxing was not all that I did on my holidays.

Thinking about my thesis

The holidays ended, and I got back to Bath itching for new subjects and stories. This year, I’m living with the same flatmates but in a different house. It suits me just fine, and I am happy to finally be living the traditional English student way. What I enjoy most about the shared flat is that we do basically everything (cooking, parties, cleaning and studying) together.

I am looking forward to Witchcraft next year

As you may have read in my last post, my final history exam was slated for 8 June. I started to prepare for it right after I got back from the Easter holidays. I knew that, while still “only” in my first year, this exam would be quite taxing, and I certainly didn’t want to underestimate it.

Death in London

The Christmas holidays are over, and I returned to Bath and headed at full steam into the new semester. I was also in for a lot of intriguing study events. Still in January, I took a three-day trip to London, where I was to study all of London’s archives and browse all the history museums.

Getting used to Bath

September 26 afternoon, I was at a Prague bus station and waiting for my “ship to the new world.” The moment the bus finally pulled away, I felt shivers down my spine and I realized with finality that my life was changing again that day. Was it a change for the better?
