Hard to sit at home

The Christmas holidays are over and I’m back in chilly Bath. I enjoyed my well-deserved days off as a student should, but relaxing was not all that I did on my holidays.

I wrote an essay so that it’s done and I don’t have to worry about it later during the second semester. I also finished reading the Decline of Religion and Magic; I will be writing a big essay about the book at the end of the year.

So far, the second semester here in Bath is going to plan. Actually, things just keep repeating. Essays, presentations, projects, and reading books. I have already read several interesting books on various topics this semester, and I cannot complain. I also met some other Czech students that I didn’t know of before.

As I wrote in my previous post, I am trying to find a “placement”. I was lucky and found a spot at the local Holburne Museum, one of England’s top ten museums. “Steward” is my job description. That’s the person ‘standing about’ in the museum, overseeing order and traffic, answering visitors’ questions, guiding the visitors, and offering instruction regarding the various exhibits. In Czech, it would probably be “průvodce”, the equivalent of “guide”.

I start on Friday 9 March, which means I have to memorize it all and be well-prepared. But I am looking forward to it, and since it’s fun, it should not be such a problem to learn it all. Two friends visited me. I showed them all of Bath, and they liked it a lot. While there has been a cruel frost in the Czech Republic, it’s lovely here in Bath. The sun keeps shining and warming you up. But that could be a problem too – the same as for most students – because it’s quite difficult to sit back home and concentrate on an essay when it’s so lovely outdoors.
