A lecture for the Gymnázium Josefa Jungmanna in Litoměřice

On the 21st of April 2021, I had the opportunity to give a lecture to 75 third year students of the Gymnázium Josefa Jungmanna in Litoměřice. I prepared an online presentation about “Studying abroad” which took place through Microsoft Teams.

The lecture was 45 minutes long and I separated it into several parts. I started by introducing myself, my journey to England and what I am currently doing. After that, I talked about studying abroad, what it entitles and what financial support/ scholarships are available for students from the Czech Republic. At this point, I familiarised the students with The Kellner Family Foundation, explained the application process and the terms and conditions of the donation contract. Then I briefly mentioned Brexit and its implication on studying university in the United Kingdom. I finished off by giving the students my tips on studying abroad and what they can do as third year students.

I was quite nervous prior to the presentation as I am not used to doing public speaking in Czech anymore. Apart from that, I was also worried about any potential technical difficulties, such as my internet connection crashing down, me not being able to connect to the call at all, or not receiving any feedback from the audience. Luckily, none of these things happened. At the beginning of the lecture, the school director kindly introduced me and one of the teachers acted as a host throughout the whole time. One part of my presentation was a brainstorming activity when I asked my audience to shout out/ write in the chat the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad. To my (pleasant) surprise, the students contributed to my little exercise and had great ideas! Even at the end of my lecture, the students asked brilliant questions, mainly concerning the acceptance of international degrees in the Czech Republic.

Overall, this was a truly unique experience as I gave the lecture from the comfort of my room in London, while my audience was in the Czech Republic. Maybe there are some benefits to online learning…
