My name is Le Thu Tran but everybody calls me “Miu”. Though I am an ethnic Vietnamese, I was born and raised in the Czech Republic. During my sixth year at the Budějovická grammar school in Prague I received a scholarship to study at Shrewsbury School, a boarding school in the UK, where I passed my A Levels. I currently study medicine at The University of Sheffield. Studying in the UK has shown me that you are truly capable of anything – you just have to try hard, not be afraid and most importantly, never give up. Thanks to my parents, I was able to travel and get to know diverse cultures from a very young age. This also motivated me to study abroad, which has given me a lot of new opportunities. Apart from natural sciences, I have always enjoyed learning languages. I can speak Czech, English, Vietnamese and German fluently and I started studying French in my first of university.

Goals

I want to become a successful medical graduate from The University of Sheffield. I have always wanted to combine natural sciences with a direct benefit for the society. Thanks to volunteering in homes for the elderly, I realised that what I enjoy the most is working with people, helping, calming and reassuring them, so I chose a career in medicine. This allows me to combine everything I am interested in, and I cannot wait to see where this path will take me in the future.

On the 21st of April 2021, I had the opportunity to give a lecture to 75 third year students of the Gymnázium Josefa Jungmanna in Litoměřice. I prepared an online presentation about “Studying abroad” which took place through Microsoft Teams.

Volunteering during a pandemic

I believe that volunteers (especially those with experience in healthcare) are now needed more than ever. Healthcare staff all around the world has been facing increasing stress and workload. In situations like this, it is often students of healthcare degrees that can help. During the first wave of Covid-19, I did not volunteer anywhere due to the social distancing measures that the hospitals in Sheffield put in place. As a result, my determination to actively help fight this virus grew even stronger with the subsequent waves.

What has the lockdown in the United Kingdom taught me

Sometimes I think to myself how lucky I am. From having a loving family and caring friends, studying in the United Kingdom, being a Kellner Family Foundation scholar, and most recently, being able to spend the UK lockdown with my boyfriend and his family in a country side house in England. Though, it did come with a cost - I have not seen my parents since New Year’s, the last time I was in Prague (and I still do not have a specific date when to go back yet).

February: volunteering and other extracurricular activities

Since my blogposts are usually related to my medical studies at Sheffield, I decided to write about something a little bit different this time. Instead of talking about my 7-week psychiatric placement (which was very eye-opening and I am considering psychiatry as a future specialty now), I thought it will be more compelling to focus on the things outside my studies for once. So, without further do, let me tell you all about my out-of-medicine life!

My first 12-week hospital placement and the OSCEs

This year, my summer was a bit shorter than usual as my third year of University started back in June already. After a few introductory lectures, we were sent off to our first proper hospital placement which lasted for 12 weeks. What I mean by “proper” is that this was the first time we were allowed to perform clinical skills (you can read more about these in my previous blogpost), see patients alone in clinics or to examine them. After this placement, we sat our first OSCE exam which I shall explain later. To summarise then, I am going to write about the last few months of my life in Sheffield.

Second year: done!

Without a doubt, my second year of university was one of the best years of my life so far. I have achieved all my academic duties with flying colours, I have fully immersed in the university life and I have been constantly surrounded by positive and inspiring people. Academically, the beginning of the year had quite a slow start with our 6-week research project (if you are interested, you can read about it from a blogpost I wrote earlier this year) but things got hectic very soon when we realised we only have five months to cover the whole curriculum. It is said that second year of medicine is one of the hardest ones and nobody understood how I had time to take French and be part of three different committees at the same time. Therefore, if you want to know, how I managed to stay on top of everything, keep on reading!

My first clinical exams

I always find it hard to explain to my family and friends back home what studying medicine in England is like. It is not just the terminology, it is also the format or the whole curriculum. I had my first clinical exam last week and when I told everyone I passed it on the first trial; I received many congratulations followed by “Sorry, what is actually a clinical exam?” Thus, I am dedicating this post to anyone who is equally confused by this term and hopefully, by the end of this post, you will have a clearer idea about studying medicine in England.

How did I become a part of a research team

My second year at Sheffield started off with a 6-weeks research attachment. My project was about the mental health of postgraduate students at our university. Studies from all around the world conclude that these students suffer from stress more often than undergraduate students. These findings gave rise to the development of the STEP tool (https://thinkaheadsheffield.wordpress.com/2018/05/30/a-step-forward-in-smoothing-pgr-transitions/) which promotes photography as a mean to self-reflect and to think about one’s mental health. After attending two workshops in the summer, the PhD students were asked to take photos for specific topics and then upload these on a shared Padlet (an online platform where one can post photos and others can like or comment on them).

Reflection on the first year in Sheffield

It is here. The end of my first year at the medical school at The University of Sheffield. The time flew by so fast - it was not that long ago when I thought the university campus was just a giant maze (ok, I still think so), I was deciding which societies to join or I was trying to find the cheapest supermarket in the area. First year was demanding – time wise, content wise and it was not easy to always stay on top of things. The whole of anatomy felt like as if I was learning a new language because unlike Czech medical schools, we were not taught Latin at my university. Other challenging components of the course included 3000 words long essays or production of posters with a current public health problem. Additionally, we had daily lectures, weekly presentations and end-of-module formatives. I would like to tell you a bit more about what I have done this whole year and what I have achieved both in the academic and extracurricular spheres.

Hospital placements? You’re only a first-year medic!

Yes, you read it right. I have only started my course not even half a year ago and the university has already sent me on a 2-week hospital placement. I was put in both of the Sheffield teaching hospitals – I spent the first week in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH) and the second in the Northern General Hospital (NGH). This was the first time I saw the hospital setting “from the other side” and I can confirm that I enjoyed my new role as a medic much more than my usual role of a sick patient. My journey of getting into a Medical School

“Why will you only know your A Levels results in August?” “Did you have to take any special tests?” “What even is a “personal statement” and what do you write in it?” Over the past year my friends and family kept asking me questions about the application process of getting into a Medical School. The UK system differs from the Czech one significantly and thus, I decided to share my story with you as well.
