I come from Ostrava where I lived until recently. I studied at a sports high school for three years, playing sports such as figure skating, tennis and volleyball, and then moved to the International School where instruction is in English only. That’s when I realized that I was really into languages, so I chose to further improve in this field. The International School also gave me an opportunity to take both the Czech school leaving exam and the International Baccalaureate, which has opened a lot of new doors for me.

My journey continues to The University of Manchester now and I will pursue my language studies there, specifically Spanish and Chinese.

The light at the end of the tunnel

Not much has happened since the end of November until now. Our university classes are still happening over Zoom and most of our days are still spent in the proximity of our house. However, the surprisingly warm weather allows me and my flatmates to go on a daily stroll to the park. The amount of people queuing in front of the ice cream truck there makes life seem normal again and you might even forget about the current situation for a while.

Lockdown 2.0

After spending almost nine months back home with my family, I finally arrived in Manchester, ready to start going back to my university classes, having a routine, and ready for my life to go back to “normal”.

The end of an era

Finishing my first semester in Argentina went great. We managed to go on a couple of more trips with the friends that I had made, before leaving with the most unforgettable memories. One of our last trips was to Salta where we visited the breathtaking salt lakes called Salinas Grandes, gained a bit of insight into the way of life of the native people and tried Salta’s traditional dish - the llama.

The land of tango, mate, and beef

So it begins. After years of anticipation, my year abroad has finally arrived. In the first semester, I will be traveling to the land of tango, mate, and beef - Argentina. Time flew by very quickly ever since I got accepted into the CII Teach Argentina program/internship, and suddenly I found myself sitting on a plane, very excited, and quite frankly very nervous since it was my first trip outside of Europe ever. A few shed tears, sorrowful goodbyes and approximately 18 hours later, I landed in, what back then was, a very cold Buenos Aires. Straight away I met other students from England that came to Argentina for the same reason, and we had the chance to get to know each other a little bit better after spending orientation week together. After that, we were assigned to our placement schools and institutes and the real work was about to start.

End of second year

My second year at university went a lot smoother compared to the first one. Manchester became my home away from home and a city I've grown to love, therefore coming back to a place I already knew my way around felt really easy. We arranged a nice accommodation with friends so we wouldn't feel as lonely as we sometimes did last year, and together we managed to experience, celebrate and properly enjoy a lot of new things such as Halloween, Bonfire night or the Chinese New Year. I know these all sound like things we could have done last year, but it's hard finding the right group of friends to enjoy these things with.

Chinese dumplings, red lanterns and the Year of the Pig

After relaxing Christmas holidays and ending the first semester with January exams, I'm now back to uni and its everyday rush. Weekly Chinese tests and essays are common and they serve as a preparation for our year abroad, which is approaching unbelievably fast. Because I’m studying two languages, I have the opportunity to divide my next year into two parts (half a year in China and half a year in a Spanish speaking country). Our visa only enables us to study in China, thus all the students had already been assigned to a certain university and are about to start filling in all the application forms. Due to the level of our Spanish being higher, we could have chosen whether we want to study at a partner university or undergo a work placement in Spain or Latin America. I chose to find an internship, therefore I am now in the stage of sending out my CV and hoping to get accepted.

How is it November already?

It feels like it’s only been a couple of days since I left the Czech Republic to go back to university, but the end of the first semester is promptly approaching and with it the well deserved Christmas break. Compared to the first year the amount of workload and the level of intensity increased, alongside more lessons and tests. On the other hand, I know Manchester pretty well now, I am no longer lost on campus and I live in a nice new accommodation with my friends, which makes my university life a lot easier.

Successful first year

It really did go by way quicker than I would expect it to, however, I finished my first year at university. Thanks a month-long exam season, the last trimester went by even faster than the first two. Luckily, I've successfully managed to finish everything.

February 2018

I got back to reality real quick after the Christmas break when the second semester started off with two week exam period. After finishing all of my exams, the lectures and seminars started again and everything is now back in full swing.
