Although most people around me regard me as an “IT guy”, I like leading others and working on various projects. Supported by the Educa Foundation, I studied at the OPEN GATE Boarding School in Babice, and passed the graduation examination cum laude. Thanks to the excellent instruction in languages at this school, it was no problem for me to pass international examinations such as DELE, CAE and IEL TS and be accepted to several U.K. universities, of which in the end I selected London Metropolitan University, Management.

In the future, I would like to be a coach or work in some other executive position in which I would work with people directly. The Kellner family Foundation has provided me with financial aid not only to cover OPEN GATE tuition but also to pay for the international language examinations, for which I am grateful.

Broad horizons

Having passed my last exam, and thus de facto completing my studies, I started reflecting on whether my studies abroad had given me what I had expected from them. I expected to get to know other cultures and thus to expand my horizons. I also expected to obtain knowledge that would not be just theoretical and would be applicable in real life.

Studies are almost over

My studies in London are nearing their end. The penultimate semester of my third year has ended. Studying in the library regularly long into the night during the exam period has become my second nature, and I will likely even miss it.

The third year has started

The last year of my Bachelor’s program matters the most. Why? It’s simple - the biggest part of the grade on the diploma is derived from the grades for the year; grades from the second year are added, but their weight is lower.

Learning to create dreams

When I tell people that I study Management and Leadership, or managing and leading people, they ask me about the difference between the two. Such questions have recently reminded me of a Saint Exupery quote from his Citadel: “Instead of leading, you officiate; you are just dull witnesses.”

Visiting the Women’s Library

Like most of my fellow students, I spent my exam period studying in libraries, where I was trying to learn as much as I could for the upcoming exams and seminar works. I started to enjoy studying in libraries so much that I continued doing so even after I finished all of my exams. My enjoyment of spending time in libraries and looking for new ones has led me to the Women’s Library, which is one of the largest of its kind having books about feminism, women's rights and the lives of women in England. Even though I had thoughts of just leaving the library, I picked up a book and started to read one of the books on feminism and female leaders.

After the holidays

The holidays passed and I left the Czech Republic for the United Kingdom, keeping myself busy all the time. My first days back in London were somewhat special because of flat-hunting all over London. I must admit that even though I spent almost a year in London, I never saw as much of it as I did in these two weeks.

You never know what you will need in life

The first semester has passed and I sat down to evaluate whether the experiences I am having meet the expectations I had before coming to London. To list my main expectations: school without old-school teaching, work experience, living in a multicultural society, and speaking English most of the time.
