Visiting the Women’s Library

Like most of my fellow students, I spent my exam period studying in libraries, where I was trying to learn as much as I could for the upcoming exams and seminar works. I started to enjoy studying in libraries so much that I continued doing so even after I finished all of my exams. My enjoyment of spending time in libraries and looking for new ones has led me to the Women’s Library, which is one of the largest of its kind having books about feminism, women's rights and the lives of women in England. Even though I had thoughts of just leaving the library, I picked up a book and started to read one of the books on feminism and female leaders.

I have met several female leaders in my life, however I must admit that it was the literature that opened my mind and I started to realize that women can do the same work as men do, of same quality and standards; nevertheless, they are still sometimes seen as worse performers than men. I had a chance to discuss feminism further with my lecturer, who is a woman and is concerned with women's rights and focuses on women in executive positions. I studied the subject of women's rights and discrimination further in my essay on employment law and discrimination. I realized that the fast-changing dynamic metropolitan society in London does not discriminate and does not see a difference between male and female applicants or employees. But when I think about the situation in terms of women's rights and the Czech Republic, I must admit there is still visible sex discrimination and it is sometimes clearly tolerated.

I, however, do not spend all of my time reading books in libraries and archives - I also spend time active leisure. Thanks to my classmates, I changed my exercise routine from weightlifting to much more interesting and enjoyable activities that give me peace of mind. I regularly attend jumping and spinning classes and I honestly enjoy the fact that we exercise with the sound of fun music instead of noise of the weights. My friends whom I met at these events and I have also started doing fit box, which may sound aggressive; in fact it is a peaceful but exhausting non-contact sport.

Music has always been more or less a part of my life, though on a passive level predominantly, and it also helps me to connect with foreign cultures. My friend from India has started to teach me how to play sitar, which is an interesting but also an incredibly difficult instrument to play. In the rest of my free time, I meet with my friends over cup of coffee and discuss political developments that influence business. Not surprisingly, number one topic of the last few days has been the complicated situation in the Middle East, which is a region that several of my friends come from.

Speaking about business, I started up a company developing web applications, which is something I have been doing for years and I see a possibility to make some profit from it in the future. In spite of my interest in making money, my focus is on non-governmental organizations in which I got interested after meeting some people at Bloomberg seminars. The most inspiring person is for me Jemetsi Tata and the model of Tata Group where a majority of shares is held by charitable organizations. As a person who grew up in children’s homes and had the chance to see how people can change others’ lives by helping, I would like to give back to society too. For that reason, I have applied for an internship in Oxfam where I would like to help using my IT skills.
