Open Gate graduate in 2012

I was born in Prague and never left home, save for sports, until age 13. Given my family’s financial situation and the generous grant from the Educa Foundation, I obtained a place in one of the pilot classes of the Open Gate project in 2005. While the structure and goals of our school have changed somewhat over the years, we succeeded in completing our secondary education with both the Czech standard graduation exam and the International Baccalaureate (IB). The opportunities that Open Gate provided to us have allowed us to apply for studies at universities abroad, and I will start my studies in Politics and Economics at the University of York in the UK, with the kind contribution from The Kellner Family Foundation.

Restart?!

For many first year university students in the UK, the summer break symbolises three months of calmness, tranquillity, relaxation and latent preparation for their future career. As usually, I have decided to go against the mainstream and few days after my arrival to Prague in June, I started my summer internship at HomeCredit International, which is one of the biggest retail banks operating in Central and Eastern Europe.

Among Vikings

Every time when someone decides to take a challenge and undergo a major life change, there are many people around who sit up and start to comment on that in a worldly-wise manner. I had the same feeling about a year ago when I set off to study in the UK, where I was about to expect continuous rain, masses of egocentric British and great deal of independence, because Czech studying and taking care of himself in a foreign country is an unimaginable situation for many of friends.

Winter Reflection written during dusky evenings

Even though January and February are categorised as winter months, we cannot really talk about proper winter in York, as we know it from Czech Republic. In total, we have enjoyed the snow cover for no more than one week so far; nonetheless, even small layer of snow can cause massive traffic disruptions, which affects the whole area of Northern Yorkshire. After this experience, the typical Czech wailing regarding roadmen seems to be pointless. Unfortunately, the snow usually melts in few hours so that you wake up to a dry sunny day, even though you enjoyed the walk in snowy York city on the night before.

Day to day reality in York

During my longest summer holidays in my life so far, me and Martin started to prepare for our upcoming study at the University of York, which has instantly become our third home (after our hometown and the Open Gate). We have been given an opportunity to enjoy last days of September in Bohemia, in comparison to our peers who were on their ways to their universities, as a majority of British universities start the academic year around the mid-September. In comparison to our classmates we have set out for York fully prepared, thus we weren’t caught out by anything unexpected.
