University ducks and geese

I have been waking up every morning to the screaming of ducks, geese and other birds living around the biggest lake with plastic floor in the world for the past two months. When I visited York for the first time in March 2013, I immediately knew that University of York was the right place for me. After two months, I can honestly say that it was a great choice.

Unlike my classmates from the Open Gate, I started my university studies at the end of September. I decided to fly through Edinburgh because of better flight connection and then I took a train to York. Older students picked me up from the train station when I arrived, and they took me to the university and even helped me with my suitcase, which had about 20 kilos, to my room on the second floor. During the first part of Fresher’s week I was unfortunately ill (it wasn’t from excessive drinking).

I was full of energy when the school started. Although I did economics as part of the IB, it still doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t have to study for it in here. It is indeed true, that the module Economics 1, which starts from the very basics, is easy but, I cannot say the same about mathematics where my IB knowledge lasted till the third week of school. Since then I do maths and maths and some more maths. Every week, I have 6 math classes and only 4 classes of economics, therefore I am sometimes not sure whether I haven’t choose Mathematics course rather than Economics. My favourite module is Historical Perspectives, where we analyse economic history of the world, slightly focusing on Britain.

University of York is one of the few British universities where you can find collegiate system. Every student is part of one of the eight colleges. It is not only a place where we live, we also organize many different events and activities ranging from jazz nights to bungee jumping above the lake. Every college has its own facilities – the dining hall, student bar and the common room. I am part of Vanbrugh College, which is situated in the very centre of the campus around the lake. It is known for its musical events and enthusiasm for sports, which was one of the reasons why I chose it.

I decided to join floorball club at the university, which was initiated last year by Martin (who is also supported by the foundation) and I am also playing netball, which is a ball game similar to basketball but without dribbling. I wanted to use my experience from the OG café and therefore I joint students’ shop called SCOOP, which sell local and fair trade products for affordable price. I nominated myself in to the committee of Economic Society this week, and run for the position of the International Officer. I hope that my classmates will support me and that I will be able to joint this interesting society not only as a regular member, but as part of the committee.

My university studies have been “great” so far and I just hope that I will be able to say the same in three years’ time.
