The beginning of the end

Four years of my undergraduate studies are over and I’m wondering if I would like to stop time and go back to my first year. Or am I ready to start a new journey?

Since the last year at Warwick has been finishing for quite a long time – submitting essays, studying for exams, the end of exams, and one month left until moving out of halls, now only the graduation is left, I think I’m ready to move on.

At the moment I’m in the Southwest England in Devon, where I volunteer at an organic farm. Apart from cattle farming, geese and chickens, and growing vegetables of all kinds, they also have a beautiful lavender’s field and a huge garden full of roses. The sea coast is only 20 minutes away where we often go with another volunteer, a German girl Anna, to watch sunsets. It’s kind of a paradise. In addition, all food we eat is organic and the owner of this place bakes amazing cakes!

Today this kind of travelling known as “wwoofing” is very popular. The volunteer works between 5 and 7 hours a day (weekends are usually free) and gets food and accommodation for free. For example, today I’ve helped to feed the animals, mow the grass and did some weeding, then I and Anna went to the beach. Tomorrow we will be helping in a tearoom, which includes preparation of salads and cream teas (black tea served with scones, cream and marmalade), washing dishes, etc.

Wwoofing is great in the sense that one can stay at one place as long as they want and get to know the surroundings, meet new people and learn something new. For me it is also interesting to experience what kind of work farmers have to do so that we can buy fresh vegetables at farmers’ markets or in supermarkets. Organic production is not definitely that optimistic as it is often presented in the media.

I plan to stay here for 12 days, then I’ll go to my graduation and then finally back home to organize an international project for young people. And the journey after that? That is unknown… however, in September I will come back to England to continue with my studies!
