So many interesting things and so little time

It is week eight of the first semester and I finally have some time to “look back”. In comparison to last year, the demands on students are much higher, but also the topics are getting even more interesting!

After a brief revision of mainstream theories of international relations, we have finally moved onto critical theories (e.g. Marxism, Feminism or Post-Colonialism), which challenge the current structures of the international system and focus on problems like marginalization of women in conflict period (the topic of my last essay) or the modern Imperialism of the West. My next module is called Creativity and Enterprise, in which we need to run an enterprising project in small groups of six, and our grade will depend on its success (or failure) and a presentation of this project to a forum of successful local businessmen and management lecturers. In our group we decided to sell goggles for the famous St Andrews Raisin Foam Fight and after a successful marketing campaign, we managed to sell out completely within only 4 days!

St Andrews is famous not only for its academic excellence (it is the second best university for politics and international relations in Britain), but also for its student experience. This year, I have been spending the majority of my free time at lifesaving practices, by working in the Student Union and volunteering in a local charity bookshop. Also, I spent the first week of the semester helping out with the organization of Freshers’ Week, which is trying to help first year students with starting their new university life. If you want to know more about if we succeeded with this, you can ask Jonas Jelinek!

However, the most interesting project I am working on at the moment is Race2Prague. It is the biggest and most successful completely student-run charitable event of the year and it will culminate in more than 200 students, divided into groups of 2 or 3, hitchhiking in January to (hopefully) snowy Prague.

Finally, I would like to share with you this photo taken today, in which over 1000 St Andrews students formed a human coat of arms of our university:

Tolik zajímavých věcí a tak málo času
