As part of this unprecedented situation, it was decided that our exams were to be taken online for the very first time. Another rather unpopular step was to cancel our graduation ceremony, or rather postpone it until a better time. We are still going to receive our diplomas in time, just through mail and not as part of a grand ceremony.
My day-to-day life during the pandemic was extremely boring. I tried to be socially responsible and so stayed home as much as possible, leaving my flat once a week to get some groceries. It was an interesting challenge and I learned a lot about myself. Fortunately, the crisis did not affect my source of income and I still had the aid of the foundation, so I was not threatened money-wise. What was more complicated was the journey back home. I booked a flight ticket twice and twice it was cancelled. I was seriously considering travelling back home in an extremely roundabout way via London and then on an emergency bus. But then some of the flight connections were restored and so I travelled Glasgow → Edinburgh → Amsterdam → Prague. At the end of May, I finally made it to the facemask paradise known as Czechia and waited out my mandatory quarantine.
Compared to the UK, we were (and still are) very well off. I was able to start looking for a job right away, even from the inside of a restaurant. At the time of writing, these and similiar establishments are yet to be opened in the UK and the government is still struggling flattening the curve. In comparison, Czechia seems to be handling this almost extremely well. I‘m very glad that I concluded my studies just as I had moved back home because I truly feel safer here.
I finished my studies in a great way, getting a First-Class Honours with my dissertation earning an A. All that‘s left to do is to start my new life in Czechia. I‘m currently working on that. Even now I can see that my education abroad financed by the foundation has provided me with many new opportunities. I hope to make a good use of what I have learned in order to enrich the society.
