One-third of Bachelor behind me

I finally got the results of all seven exams that I took in the summer term. I am pleased to say that my goal I had set at the beginning of this academic year was met.

I had to write seven tests in total - five were from economic subjects and two from languages. Although I had experience with long exam papers from last year’s IB exams, I worried whether I could handle all of my university exams. The most difficult exam for me was Historical Perspectives because it was a three-hour exam where I had to write three essays - which makes about 15 handwritten pages. To do well in the exam, it was not enough to go to lectures and take notes, it was also necessary to read many books and essays by prominent economic historians such as Broadberry or Mokyr and to remember important dates and years of publication of each book.

Summer term was fortunately not just about tests and preparation for them. We worked hard with our volleyball team and our netball team played the last match in the school league, where we finished as fourth. Floorball training in the summer term has unfortunately not taken place, as our small team failed to agree on the time of training because of different lecture schedules and exams. In the free time, I was able to do some further explorations of the surroundings of York, which had turned from chilly winter into colorful spring with constant screaming of goslings and ducklings which reminded me at 6 o’clock in the morning that it is time to wake up and to continue with the exams prep.

I attended several workshops about studying abroad, because I will spend next year in Canada at the University of British Columbia. Some presentations seemed a little but funny to me, because most of the students were English and studying abroad was new for them and therefore some information was pretty basic. I believe that a year spent in England has prepared me well enough for further studies abroad - this time in Canada. After much hunting for all the necessary documents, I received a study permit along with visa and I have already secured accommodation on campus. The very last thing I have to do is to buy flight tickets and the Canada adventure can begin.

Before I leave for the other side of the world, I still have very busy summer holidays ahead of me. I will be an intern at the headquarters of Vodafone Czech Republic, Department of Supply Chain Management in July. I hope I will use the newly acquired knowledge from Statistics and Economics 1 there. I will then be a team leader at a summer camp in the first week of August and then I will pack and say goodbye to my family and friends for a long time, because I will come back to Czech Republic only just before Chrismas.

Academic year 2013/2014 is successfully behind me and I am already a one-third Bachelor. After many years spent at Open Gate School I felt butterflies in my stomach again at the beginning of October from starting a new school, which was strengthen by the fact that the University was located 1000 km from home. Now I am going to spent my second year in Canada, almost 10 000 km from home, which would seem completely impossible only few years ago.
