Nothing has stayed the same…

After four and a half months of holiday a new academic year has begun.

The first change which has happened since the end of the last academic year was moving into a private accommodation in July. In the previous two years I was living in a student accommodation with a lot of other students in a flat. Now I am living with my partner, which has been, I have to say, a very pleasant change. I have not had the feeling of privacy and home for a long time, thus I really enjoy it here.

During the summer holiday I visited the Czech Republic just for a short period of time, and before the semester even started I had already leafed through books, in order to get into the student pace on time. Despite the fact I tried to prepare myself a bit, I was actually caught out by the start of the semester. Again, worries and concerns were my first reaction, however, I have been trying hard to stay focused and think positively – let’s see if a self-fulfilling prophecy makes itself existent. The fact that several assignments need to be done in groups pushes me forward and makes me study harder. Exactly one month from now I will be attending my first exam, and so my nervousness levels increase with every minute. Nevertheless, this will not put me off of looking forward to enjoying Christmas, which I will be spending here in Scotland for the first time.

Studies, however, contribute only partly to the life success and personal development. For this reason, I have decided to find another volunteering activity to fulfil my free time in the upcoming months. Although the university provides a lot of information on volunteering opportunities, I wanted to find something that most of the people at the university do not know about or have not thought about. A month ago, while browsing the internet, an advertisement popped out at me concerning a volunteering position at a company called Victim Support Scotland. They focus on emotional and practical support for victims and witnesses of crime, as well as dealing with families and close friends of these victims and witnesses, when necessary or required. It is a hugely volunteers-based organisation operating not only in their offices, but also in their homes and the court procedures. I could not miss such an opportunity, for the organization’s contribution to the society and a valuable experience associated with the Psychology field. After sending my application, I was invited to an interview, and at the moment I am waiting for their decision. Hopefully, this will not be the final stage of my interest, and I will get the permission to contribute to their work as well.

I would like to conclude this writing with a motto I will keep reminding myself throughout this year: ‘Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today’, as a way to achieve my goals and dreams. For now I would like to wish you all a lot of successes in your life and mainly loads of joy during the Christmas time. Finally, I would like to send my huge thanks to the foundation for their persistent support.
