New year, new experiences

2015 started off pretty well. As soon as my friend and I came to London from the Christmas holidays (she stayed with me to experience proper Czech Christmas), I once again fell in love with the city and England in general, despite being sad about having to leave my family at home. London was sunny and welcoming and stunning, as it usually is.

School also started anew. We had two big project deadlines in the middle of February, which meant that we had to finish and rework a lot of the briefs we finished for the past six months. I managed to finish everything in time and was quite proud of myself for being able to organise my time and not stress too much about the submissions. Since then, we started a new module, which is very interesting and will result in our own pop-up shop with our works for sale. I also finally started actually going to the primary school to volunteer and met my two students, Isabella and Charlie. I enjoy the experience greatly, they are both amazing children and I am happy to help them and the school.

Except for school, I also wanted to start with some extracurricular activity, to keep me occupied and to try something new. When I attended the societies and sports fair, the choice was absolutely obvious – archery. Since I was a child, I always wanted to try it and lately, bow and arrow are often the weapons chosen by so many cool book/movie characters. And I absolutely love it! I knew I would like it, but not as much as I actually do. It is not as sporty as other sports, but it’s so much fun and all of the people are really nice too, so I am thoroughly enjoying myself once or twice a week, shooting targets and balloons.

Moreover, we have been offered a school trip to the Warner Bros studios in London. Since I love Harry Potter I decided to go and it was one of the best experiences of my life. When people watch the movies, they don’t realise how much work is behind even just one scene: all of the props which we don’t even pay attention to, hundreds of custom made paintings, statues, posters, amazing almost real-life beasts, wigs, costumes, sets, architecture designs, miniatures…all of that in two big buildings and 3-4 hours of walking around, mesmerized. It was inspiring and once again convinced me that creating concept art for movies, be it animated or not, is something I really want to be a part of.

Lastly, spring is finally here. Coventry has been warmer, sunnier and even the nature is waking up. The birds are singing, early flowers are growing and grass became greener. It makes me very happy and I can’t wait for the rest of the year, which, so far, seems to be one of the good ones.
