My first proper Psychology experience

About a month and a half ago I applied for a work experience, as we are expected to develop our abilities and knowledge for our future profession.

When I saw the advertisement posted by the SRC (Student Representative Council), it caught my eye and I was very enthusiastic to use the opportunity and try to be a member of the voluntary group. The offer concerned an engagement with “Nightline”, a student telephone line available at nights. A few weeks passed and I finally received an answer from them, telling me that I am invited to the “Nightline” training.

What exactly am I talking about? Basically, the purpose of this work is generally to help the students, who contact us via telephone. Student life is not always easy, and some people may have the need to share their concerns, issues, questions and feelings with someone, who either just listens to them, or directs them towards a solution. Even though you might think that close friends should provide the necessary help, it is not always like that or simply other people may know better what should be done. Some students may feel lonely, and may therefore just call to have a chat, but others may call due to financial problems, relationships or studying problems. We are always there for them.

I did not only choose this opportunity because it sounded interesting, but also because I am a second year Psychology student and am slowly being forced to think about my future career from which I would like to make my living. Herewith, I am trying to broaden my potential possibilities of employment, and also stand out from the crowd. Although I have always been fascinated by the human mind and the powers of Psychology, my primary reason for working in the field of Psychology has been to help people by gaining and understanding of their actions and emotions. This voluntary job supports my interest and enables me access to my dream. I would like to be here for the ones, who need it and seek support. This job takes me a step closer to a better future, in which I will hopefully be analysing personalities and providing consultancies.
