Kenilworth

Due to limited space in residential halls, most students at Warwick live off campus in their second year.

With my friends we have decided to rent a property in Kenilworth - a small traditional town with long history, nice neighbourhood and many cool things, such as farmers‘ market and even a castle (well, ruins of a castle). Despite it took me a good few days to get the household running, I am really glad with the choice, because Kenilworth is a great place to live in.

The connection to the university is provided by a bus service. It is quite a special one, for it reliably generates random numbers (if you consider the arrival times). I found this highly fascinating in the first week, however, by the time second week came, it wasn’t as amusing anymore and I decided to cycle the few miles instead.
It turns out bicycle is a very popular mean of transport in the United Kingdom and you can see many people cycling on their road bikes (while almost no people on any other bikes). I keep wondering if the main reason is the joy of cycling or the quality of local buses.

My daily routine has also changed, since I discovered there are places on campus quiet enough to let you study (assuming a good pair of earplugs). This comes in handy especially in between lectures, as there’s no point in going home for an hour or two. The timetable is rather empty compared to last year, although this is compensated for by uncountable amount of homework. I like to work „in the library“ even after the lectures and so it often happens I only return home in the evening.

Having dealt with the maths problems, I proceed with cooking lessons at night, usually by trial and error. It is a great way to take a rest, because in the worst case scenario I burn my lunch and eat sandwiches the next day (and it has been experimentally verified this is not nearly as bad as it may seem).

Coping with off-campus life is by no means easy, but the maths works out so that I can afford to sleep for eight hours on most days and at the end of the day I am really happy to be back.
Finally, I am proud to say that after a single year of my presence at Warwick, we have improved and ranked (mathematics based) among the top 25 universities in the world. They say a maths degree can prepare you for essentially anything, and I am quite sure especially the one at Warwick does.
