Back in London

After four months I am back in London for the second year of my undergraduate degree.

I spent the first month here chasing accommodation, staying in hostels and with friends. The initial problems I faced are now solved and I can finally fully concentrate on my studies. So far this year at university seems easier than the previous one.  Maybe it is because I now know a bit about the system here and do not need to worry about the less important things.

The modules on my course this year are really great. Their content is very interesting and beneficial to me. I especially enjoy mathematical methods, quantum physics and electricity and magnetism. A new compulsory subject called Scientific communication is supposed to teach us how to communicate science in public, which may be very useful in the future.

In my free time, I have decided to renew and improve my knowledge of Spanish. Furthermore I am restarting dance, which I stopped for the last year and which was so important to me in Prague.

It is also the right time to start looking for an internship for summer and the next term. This summer I undertook an internship at the biophysics department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague. The research was focused on multidrug resistance in yeast. I wanted to explore whether biophysics is the field of science, which I would like to focus on.

It was a great opportunity for me to gain a full laboratory experience and see how research in this field is conducted. I was also very lucky to be working with a very friendly and helpful group of people and to be allowed to try a large variety of techniques. Even though I spent most of summer’s days in the lab, I fully enjoyed the work. I confirmed to myself that I would like to follow a career in research.

Hopefully, I will be able to find similar experience at my university in the UK. I would like to look into the second field I am considering as my main specialization – particle physics.
