As I wrote before, the Canadian teaching system is very different from the English one and therefore my return to York wasn’t easy. I attended the “returners seminar” in the first few weeks, where we discussed the “culture shock”, how it affected us after arriving to our partner universities and about the possibilities of experiencing the “reverse culture shock” when we get back home. This made me think about what the word home means to me. I have regularly moved every three months since coming to university so the place, which I call home, is now the place where I live at that moment and where I have family or friends. Because of that, moving from one home to another is now much easier. I definitely experienced culture shock when I first arrived to York but now I don’t mind moving and I am always looking forward to the new opportunities that my future home will have to offer.
I was anxious to get back to the University of York for my third year even though I prefer the Canadian teaching style. I was excited to see my York friends, whom most of them I didn’t see for over a year, and my very first privately rented house, which I found along with my English friends when I was still in Kelowna. Living in a shared house is a pleasant change after 8 long years spent in the halls of residence and I wouldn’t change it even though we have to deal with the bills and remind the estate agency that they forgot to repair some things around the house. We live in a typical English terraced house with smaller rooms but double glazed windows and good heating system.
The latest change in my life occurred at the beginning of the school year when I was admitted into the University of York Volleyball team. I am very proud that I can represent my university, however playing high level sport is very time consuming so it is not unusual that I am on campus from 9AM till 10PM.
I will conclude my studies with six three-hour exams in the summer term since I am not writing a dissertation. All six subjects are yearlong and therefore it is vital that I keep up with the materials covered in lectures so I can revise before the exam rather than trying to learn everything in the last minute. Sometimes, I have to learn about economic models that my peers learnt last year but I in Canada did not, on the other hand I am familiar with some other models that we study in Microeconomics.
I manged to cope with the reversed reverse culture shock when I came back to my York home, my friendships picked up where we have left them in 1st year and now it is time to fill in my Master’s applications and more importantly finish my Bachelor’s degree here in York. And of course win our division league in volleyball.
