Fifth year, First semester.

To sum up

Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine.

This was my first block of 5th year rotation at The Department of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation in FN Motol. It provides a comprehensive care for patients during surgery and during preoperative and postoperative periods, including general anaesthesia and various types of local anaesthesia especially in the departments of neurosurgery, vascular surgery, general surgery, ENT, gynaecology etc. The resuscitation section deals with comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of patients whose general health condition for life-cycle disorders endangers the life of the patient and requires the highest level of health care.

The department is subdivided into: Anaesthesiology section included patient care during surgery, anaesthesia, and artificial lung ventilation, with close cooperation with surgeon or operation group. Resuscitation section - ARO beds, provision of patients with vital signs failure, permanently present. Emergency resuscitation which deals with recovery throughout the hospital. Pain management

As per the rotation, we were assigned to individual doctors where we accompanied them to the Operating Rooms in that they would explain and quiz us as the operation progressed. This also included practical hands on e.g. cannulation and intubation of patients. At midday we would return to classes to have further lectures/seminars to conclude the day.

Cardiovascular Medicine.

This department offers patients conservative and mini-invasive treatment of cardiovascular diseases, which includes the heart and blood vessels. The department has a modern complex of catheterization rooms for coronary artery examination and intervention treatment of acute myocardial infarction, coronary unit, a centre for treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The specialized unit of heart failure is focused on the care of patients with this disease.

In this rotation, similar to anaesthesiology, we accompanied doctors to different wards/operating rooms with patients in the above mentioned problems.

Orthopaedics.

This field deals with surgery and treatment involving the musculoskeletal system, and can entail degenerative conditions, trauma, sports injury, tumours, and congenital issues. This was a 3 week rotation: one week in the adults department, one week in the children side and one week of traumatology. Having experienced this field, it is crystal clear to me, I am not going to be an orthopaedic doctor.
