Winter and other goings-on

A university on the quarter system has no choice, a university on the quarter system must hit the ground running. Such was my entry into this school year, and that despite my premeditated early arrival on campus, designed to give me time to acclimatize.

The gears of classes and extracurricular activities started spinning right away, of course. It was time to, as a member of the executive board, help select in interviews my future colleagues in the International Student Association. I believe we ended up picking a great bunch of people and so far, we seem to be able to keep up both the most important functions of the group - acting as home away from home, a friendly place, and organizing events for members of the greater international community while maintaining a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

My original intention to take the overload of five classes throughout this quarter has proven unreasonable and barely feasible pretty soon, so I decided to instead pay better attention to my current commitments and make sure I'm really focused. The quarter has since hit full speed, although it's actually coming to an end already, since everything is just racing forward here.

I have decided to participate this year in the biggest student-organized university philantropy in the United States, Northwestern University Dance Marathon. In practicality it means for me that I have to raise $400 for a charity that helps children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which will grant me the prerogative to participate in straight 30 hours of dancing with all the campus's attention at the beginning of March. On campus, Dance Marathon is considered something every NU student should do at least once, so I thought "Hey, why not this year?" Well, we shall see how that works out.

Up until recently, the weather has kept providing people with relatively pleasant surprises, one could even go out running and it would be nice, but that fine time, as it seems, has passed, and it is now just a fading memory, with probable cold temperature all the way through April. Well, it is Windy City after all, no use whining about it. Thankfully though, we can expect the university to again prepare an ice rink, so there will be fun to had in the winter, too :)
