We’re past the hump

I have been here at Northwestern University for more than 2 years now. I have made a plethora of new friends from all over the world, I have taken classes with professors whose expertise in their respective subjects is far beyond my wildest dreams and I have had the opportunity to immerse myself in the American Culture.

The ride has been so amazing and the pace has been so high, that I completely forgot to think about the fact that it will all eventually come to an end. It was not until the early days of the year 2015 that I have stopped and thought about my experiences here and thought to myself: “I only have a limited amount of time left – I have to make the best out of it”. It might be a little early to think this way but I am glad that I realized this now.

At the beginning of this quarter I have made a checklist of things that I wanted to achieve during this academic term and I have to say that I am very happy that I was able to achieve most of them. I have taken an advanced class in decision making – an area of psychology that is extremely appealing to me. It offers a unique insight into the human mind and into the fallacies that our thinking is prone to. However, the biggest benefit of this class is that it made me think deeply about my own life decisions and my behavior in various life situations. It made me realize that even though I think of myself as an incredibly rational person, I sometimes still fall prey to the same logical errors as everyone else. Overall it is an extremely interesting and humbling academic experience.

I am also trying to take advantage of everything that our campus has to offer besides just the academic life. I am attending sporting events, I have been supporting our basketball team and many other varsity teams. I have also attended many talks by great speakers who came to our university to provide insight into their fields or just to voice their opinions on important issues. I have also invested a great deal of energy into a summer internship hunt and if everything goes well, this Summer I should be able to gather valuable experience as an analyst at a management consulting company.

While I’m trying to push myself to experience the campus life more actively, I’m still staying committed to the same activities as usual. I’m still on the Northwestern hockey team, even though our season is now over. I am also still very active in the ISBE - Analytics club. I was recently promoted to a project manager and we are currently working on a very interesting project with Northwestern Athletics. Overall, this has been a very busy quarter for me, but I feel like I have spent my time and energy in a very meaningful way!
