The "war" is still not over

The first year on the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University is unofficially behind me, nonetheless, the “war” is still not over, as I have 2 more exams ahead of me. These exams are anatomy and histology.

Second half of the second semester was in the spirit of revising, studying and revising again. Exams were coming closer and I did not really have time for other things than medicine. My life consisted of going to classes, sometimes visiting the gym and evening studying, finished by few hours of sleep.

The exam term approached and I have successfully finished all my subjects, including biology and genetics, anatomy, histology, IT and physical education. As an ending to my P.E. classes we had to swim 100 metres under a certain time to pass. I overcame this challenge with a brilliant time, which shocked me despite the fact that I never really enjoyed swimming. This was done thanks to the lessons of Marcela Gnadová, who gave us swimming lessons at the Open Gate gymnasium.

The only considerably easy exam we had this year was IT. During the second semester we studied how to work with database programs as well as Microsoft Office, which was an easy task for someone with at least a minimal interest in information technology. This subject was concluded by an exam, which was even more absurd than the whole semester of this subject.

By the end of June I have attempted my anatomy exam for the first time, and in spite of the fact that I studied restlessly for weeks, I was not able to fully cover everything. Unfortunately, I did not manage to pass an entrance test, therefore having to try once more in the following month, for which i’m already preparing. The length of my holidays now comes down to the success of my following exam.

The first year could be summed up in the following way: Studying, revising, more revising and pressure from both the university and my classmates. Despite all of these difficulties, my will to learn new things as well as the newly gained experiences motivate me to try even harder.

In conclusion I would like to mention the fact that I expected Czech medicine to be a challenge, however, I did not expect it to be a challenge of such a magnitude. Finishing the first year will therefore be a deserved victory.
