Summer internship and third year economics at UCL

Having spent my summer in Finance department of UBS I have learned a lot about the bank and myself. I was assigned to a team in Product Control and worked with eight full time employees.

My line manager was quite senior in the department and therefore very busy. During my first few week I have organised work-shadowing of my team member, which was a great opportunity to get to know them and learn about their roles. Despite my pro-activity my line manager has not assigned me a lot of work to do, so I have used the relationships with other team members to be given more work and responsibility from them. I have learned about accounting principles, P&L verification and other processed daily executed by Product Controller. Additionally, I have been given a project during which I analysed FICC (fix income currencies and commodities) cost centres and created 20 new books. Towards the end of my internship I presented my findings to senior management. My two months at UBS have been an invaluable experience

Given my very busy summer, which I have spent predominantly working I was excited to in September return to student life. In a third year students are given a choice of more than 20 modules to choose from. Based on my general strengths which have been confirmed by my second year exam results I have chosen mainly microeconomics modules. This term I am studying Economics of Regulation, Industrial Economics and Game Theory and in second term I will be doing Economics of Information, Economics of Financial Market and Economics of Tax Policy. Additionally, I am continuing with German. I enjoy this year the most so far and believe it is mainly because of the choice of modules we were given. I hope this will be true even after the Christmas break and very much look forward to learning more Microeconomics.
