Right after finishing my exams, I started interning in a graph databases company to be able to afford my research placement taking place later this summer in London. The work itself is quite fun - I implement network algorithms. Algorithms like this have close analogues in physics and so I am able to apply the theory I was learning throughout the academic year.
The work itself allowed me to travel as well. In fact, I am in Barcelona now, where we had a meeting with the company's client. I had no plans for the holidays and the weather was not really good in Czech Republic - so I decided to stay over the weekend. The rest of the "company" went home and I moved from an expensive hotel at Sants to Jam Hostel on Joanic.
It is a quite known fact that Barca is one of the best places to go skateboarding. Spots like MACBA or Sants rank amongst the top skateboarding places in the world. I bought a board and a pair of shoes, since the only shoes I had here were the suity ones. Building a skateboard and buying new skate shoes just because of three days of riding might not seem the wisest thing to do, but I a not sure whether I will have many more chances to ride like this over the summer.
In fact, I am starting a research placement in quantum information a day after the guys behind the horizon celebrate the Independece day. I've a lot of (interesting) reading for my master's thesis over the summer already. If all goes well, I should complete the project under the supervison of Fay Dowker. She studied related topics under Stephen Hawking actually, which I find extremely motivating.
