Starting out…

Oh, the changes I’ve been through, one by one! There was an academic change, as Open Gate became history after seven years and Prague’s Cevro Institute became my next academic challenge; changes in my life – in where I live; career changes – in where I work; and personal changes – in what I have been going through. I was really looking forward to these changes and new challenges – and as the first three months of living in Prague have demonstrated, I had a good reason indeed.

First, let me write a few lines about what, not just me but also my Open Gate schoolmates, have been realizing over the last few months and are frankly not afraid to admit. We have no problem presenting something we made 15 minutes before the class, we can speak out (comprehensibly), we can show our opinions in a collective, we don’t take ourselves too seriously yet we are ambitious and have a vision, we can choose a great team – and I could go on and on. Why am I writing this at all? Everyone can look around and say how many of such people they have around them. That makes me think even more about my former schoolmates and other cohorts, and wish that we always remain aware of this uniqueness and that it gives us energy during our adult transition to the almost independent (student) life.

Thanks to some great people, I can share a pad with Vlasta, my schoolmate both past and present. We only got a fridge after three months (okay, not a full three months, but that does not make much difference), and in addition to that we did a lot of furnishing in our flat, took “family” trips do IKEA at Černý Most, and our pal Adrian is already warning us he might get a new household pet. We like our flat – and so does our friend Tom who checks in often to see if our high school love of Playstation 3 persists. I have grown to love Vlasta’s singing; the Vietnamese guy from the Late Night Shop round the corner has given me a lot of smiles though I am still waiting for a receipt; and I am almost on first-name terms with trams. The transport pass and the ISIC are my most valuable cards, located in a strategic position in my wallet.

You wouldn’t believe how I got my Internet connection. It’s for free and available at any time, and it didn’t take much hassle either. I don’t know if you have the chance, but I live just opposite PORG and the distance across the street is not much trouble for my Wi-Fi connection. Who would have guessed that, aside from the generous support from The Kellner Family Foundation, I would also enjoy the support from the IT department of the famous Prague high school?

Christmas is here! I wish everyone to enjoy it as normally as possible and as they (and not marketing experts) wish. Only you know best what makes you feel good, and may 2017 be a successful year for all of us!

When I browsed the blogs of my friends (and fellows I don’t know), I saw they all wrote about their beginnings in a new school. That made me decide to do the same thing, only in my next blog, where you will be able to read how I have been enjoying my dream track of Political Science and International Relations. I will also share a few funny stories – like when the Prague Castle guardsmen forced us to leave a political science lecture!
