Slowly Back to the Game

A huge cast has taken me out of practical lessons that we mostly have in school. The seven weeks that I had to spend in the Czech Republic due to my broken ankle passed just like that. That’s because I had lots of work with organizing our summer tour, and I also studied theoretical subjects to keep up with the rest of the class. I kept searching for a way to exploit my situation and learn tricks that I probably wouldn’t get around to were I healthy and would not have decided to learn them.

A week after my cast was removed, we had to present a new solo performance at our university in Rotterdam. We were to show our skills built up last semester in creating a concept and thinking about the creative process. So I also spent a lot of time while healing on coming up with a new performance.

This emerged naturally from my momentary situation. During the performance, I remain seated the whole time. And in my hand I have only a paper coffee cup and a ping pong ball. In creating the performance, I was testing the boundaries of these seemingly simple and specific objects, and the possibilities of their abstract use. I found my inspiration during an excursion to Mad About Surrealism in the Boijmans Museum.

Between this practical test and the final examination period there suddenly only remained one month, in which I concentrated on rehabilitating my ankle to be able to attend practical hours more and more. The condition of my ankle ultimately prevented me from taking examinations in three subjects only, which I am sorry about. I successfully passed all other examinations.

Now I am sitting on a bus on a trip back to the Czech Republic for summer vacation. I remember the inspirational final performances of our fourth-year students last week, I am thinking of that friendly international team to which I was kindly welcomed. As I gaze out from the bus window, I recapitulate everything that I learned over the past year – how I improved and advanced. I am not sure that the next 15 hours on this bus will suffice...

I am prepared to make the most out of the summer, and during performances, to capitalize on the year at the Contemporary Circus university. We will be traveling with the Cink Cink Cirk troupe this summer with a new performance entitled Dukto. So if you have read this far and are interested in what I’m actually studying, I sincerely invite you to Prague on July 14, 2017 to the Jatka78 stage, where we will premiere Dukto.

Without the support from KFF, none of this would be possible. Thank you.
