It’s written, printed and handed it. What’s next?

It’s been three weeks since I happily handed it my dissertation. The deadline was already 16th January and as a topic I chose recent ‘Umbrella Revolution’ in Hong Kong.

However, as the revolution unfolded very slowly and only ended few days after Christmas I could not, as I had planned, finish it all before the holidays. Therefore I decided for a compromise to spent almost 2 weeks at home, not worrying about it and fly back to Aberdeen before the New Year to finish it on time. Luckily enough, Aberdeen was rather deserted during that time and thus I had not many distractions and could fully concentrate on writing, rewriting, deleting, formatting and finalizing my dissertation. Relieved I handed it in a day before the deadline, enjoying my very last weekend off.

The very next week my very last semester at this University and maybe at university in general started. Although we still have many essays and course work for this semester my thoughts are usually trying to figure out what next. More and more I feel I finally need to have my gap year and as always my favourite destinations are in Asia and Africa. In summer I organized a library project in Madagascar and now it looks like I might soon open another library, this time in Asia. Chinese language is another thing that attracts me about going to Asia and so I think my next destination is decided.

Here in Scotland it’s starting to be a bit crazy. I receive many emails every week from my University with job offers, internships or workshops that can improve my employability. My friends are busy filling in their postgraduate applications or job applications and although the dissertation, arguably the hardest part of our degree is done many of us have less time than before.  Before blindly applying for something and spending lots of money on a degree I might not even enjoy doing I decided to ‘postpone’ my studies for a while. I spent more time with my friends, work more to save up for my travels and enjoy the last months in Aberdeen and Scotland in general. Who knows if the graduation will be for me the end of something old and familiar or the beginning of something new and adventurous?
