It’s almost Christmas again

This year’s arrival to Coventry was as exciting and full of anticipation as last year, just without the stress and anxiety. I was looking forward to living with my friends, meeting my classmates again, being a „second year“, and, most importantly, return of autumn, which I excitedly await every September.

We didn’t have access to the internet for a week after I arrived, so I had to employ my abilities to keep myself occupied without it. Instead of staring into my computer, I therefore walked around the city I now know so very well and looked out for all the changes that happened during the summer. The city and the university have been re-working a lot of the spaces to make them more modern, student-friendly and green. As Coventry was bombarded during the Second World War, a lot of the city center is simply bricks and concrete and there are almost no green spaces or parks, which would help it breathe and be prettier. However, with the gorgeous new buildings and even more young people coming to study at the university, the city recognizes the lack of greenery and decided to make changes. Whether I will get to see them before I graduate, that’s a different question.

School started off with a new module that I am now finishing. For the past seven weeks we have worked on „Experimental Illustration“, a module which requires us to come up with our own social movement and create branding for it. Because of my love for dogs, I decided to base my social movement on dog breed discrimination and have since made a clay pitbull head, designed a logo and mashed up a video to promote the movement. This module was supposed to push us out of our comfort zone and it definitely has, but in long term, it’s a good thing - I for example discovered my love for clay work. Once we finish this module next week, we will be starting a new one, which is probably going to be even more exciting than any previous one.

While I work on my university projects, I also remain the secretary of the archery sports club, so I shoot arrows into targets three times a week. I still love it and can see progress as well, which makes me very happy. I also signed up for beginners Swedish language classes, because I always wanted to learn Swedish, as it is an unusual, but a very interesting language. I will be starting in February and I already can’t wait.

On the topic of myself being impatient, Christmas mood has taken over all shops, city decorations and advertisements and I am ecstatic. I get excited every year, but missing my family makes it even more special when I actually get to see them and bake with them and sing with them.

Finally, the first term of this year has been successful in all things and I am curious to see what comes in the rest of the school year. I hope it’s going to stay as good as it started.
