Imperial, part II

My second term at Imperial is slowly coming to an end, in 3 weeks to be precise. This term as well as last I did my best to take advantage of the possibilities to actively take part in the university’s life outside of my course.

Most important of all, I managed to secure a summer placement through the college-wide Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP), which allows students to participate on the research that is being done in the college. Imperial strongly supports this scheme and offers generous bursaries to participating students. Therefore, financing my placement shouldn’t be an issue. My project will be on spacecraft trajectory optimization and will be carried out under the supervision of my personal tutor.

On the same note, last weekend I attended the National Student Space Conference in Bristol. A number of speakers spanning space scientists, engineers and students gave talks on the near future of space exploration and exploitation. The keynote was delivered by Alan Bond, founder of Reaction Engines Ltd, a British company that is developing a revolutionary engine called SABRE and Skylon, a reusable spaceplane, which should offer immediate and cheap access to orbit, allowing mankind to utilize space more widely. Apart from the lectures themselves, I also benefited immensely from meeting students from other leading British and European engineering universities.

Besides, the Imperial College Floorball Team (of which I am member) managed to finish 2nd in the British Universities Floorball League (BUFL), winning all matches of the final tournament after unconvincing performance in the previous ones. As the newly elected chairman of the club, I will strive to better this result next year.
