Hong Kong – šerm, hůlky, kopce a „smartphony“

It has been exactly 2 months since I landed in Asia – place, where I will spend my second year at the University. I hadn’t done any research prior to my visit as I wanted to find out everything on my own. The only thing I knew about Hong Kong before I came here, was that area twice as big as Prague is populated by 7milons of people. And as the village I came from has only 900 citizens, I had to get used to living in the city where the population density is about 100* higher. I did experience a shock, but it was shock of seeing green hills and forests instead of skyscrapers behind my window in the school dormitories.

My University, as I soon found out is located in one of the areas not that close to the centre, and because the Hong Kong policy states that there has to be 40% of a “green” land in Hong Kong, when visiting my University you don’t feel like being in Hong Kong at all.

There were many events organizes by the University during the first couple of days, I was lucky to meet nice people and get to know the culture better. Even though this is my 2nd year, I still felt like a freshman as I did not know any places, people or the culture. However people here are very friendly and welcoming and made my integration with the community much easier.

University offers many activities for students and I was happy to choose squash and fencing. I played squash before already, but fencing was completely new to me and I have to admit it is really fun! Unfortunately due to my visa status I cannot work or volunteer, therefore I try to use my free time to explore the interesting places, temples and monuments and I also do quite a lot of hiking trips here.

The education system here is very similar to that in Scotland, therefore it was not difficult for me to get used to that. One thing I noticed, is that people do not turn off their smartphones, they don’t even put them away – ever! And because everyone has at least one, often you feel like going to the dinner with an iPhone or Samsung instead of your friends. However this too is one of the aspects of this multicity in the heart of Asia.
