Hello, Heihei, Ciao

My summer began with a summer practice at the hospital. At the beginning of July, I spent two weeks at IKEM (Institutie of Clinical and Experimental Medicine) at the Hepatogastroenterology department.

Most of the time I was working together with nurses; my daily job at the department was for example to do blood samples, give injections, measuring vital signs, performing basic physical examination or ECG measuring. One of the most amazing moments was to be present at a liver transplantation. The surgery was successful, and it took only about 5 hours (complicated cases can take up to 12 hours) and the work of surgeons and other specialists was fascinating.

In the middle of July, I travelled across the ocean for the first time in my life. The trip took almost 14 hours and then I finally got out of the plane at the Grantley Adam’s Airport at Barbados. The island is located on the eastern part of  the Caribbean. During my almost 3 week long stay at Barbados I enjoyed the beautiful Caribbean sea, the sun and one of the nicest beaches in the world.  My main goal at Barbados was to have a summer practice at a local hospital at a general surgery department– specifically at BayView and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. At the hospitals I was in a small group with another three local medical students, and the head of our group was Dr. Christopher Warner who was the head of the Surgery Department at BayBiew Hospital. From my own interest I spent an extra day at the local state hospital at Enterology department – it was a great opportunity for comparing the European and American health system. The biggest difference is in the way of paying for health care – patients pay themselves all procedures, examination and even consultation with a doctor.

My next summer traveling began in the middle of august – I was invited to Norway, specifically to a region called Sogn og Fjordane on the west coast. Norway is probably the most beautiful country I have seen so far – the combination of an amazing nature and mountains is adorable. In total I climbed 9 mountains in 14 days. I practiced my Norwegian and travelled along the western part of Norway.

In the middle of September I got a nice surprise – a week trip to Italy. I visited Rome, Italian countryside and Venice.

Summer 2014 was my more adventurous summer so far – in three months, I visited four different countries, I took 14 flights and walked hundreds of kilometers.

Now I am ready to start a new semester at Charles University – as a student of third year of medical school.
