Fourth year

Fourth year at medical school is quite different. I am finally feeling like a “person who is going to become a doctor”. Previous years were mainly based on memorizing thousands and thousands of different terms which were not directly associated with the treatment of patients.

I am done with my first course in fourth year – nephrology, rheumatology, geriatrics and urology.  It was the best course I have had at school so far. Following course is cardiology, according to me one of the most difficult branches in medicine. But I still feel full of energy after my amazing summer in Norway, so I really hope my brain will be so kind and help me to remember all the diseases, EKGs and hundreds of drugs.

Rather than describing my daily studying routine I would rather describe three months I have spent in Norway.  Before I started studying at the 3rd medical faculty in Prague, I didn’t really know much about Norway. Maybe that there is a nice nature and that the capital city is Oslo. I would never guess that 3 years later, that I would be able to communicate, read and even think and dream in Norwegian.

I spent three months as a volunteer in a small health care centre in the west part of Norway. My daily routine was to help mainly the elderly or people with multiple sclerosis. This disease is much more frequent in Scandinavia than in the Czech Republic. It was really a good experience to see how these people handle normal daily activities. Especially for future doctor it is important to see how people with this kind of syndromes live. We still have to think about patients’ quality of life and not only about the treatment of diseases.

I also had an opportunity to have an internship together with young doctors at the biggest hospital in the western part of Norway. I spent there a week at the surgery department. I reviewed my skills in patient examinations, saw many operations and finally participated at a cast course. I was amazed about the material which is used in Norway – not only because of the possibility to choose different colours of a cast, but of all the different types which I have never seen in the Czech Republic. The only sad thing at the end of the week was to realize that I still have 3 years to go at medical school and then I’ll hopefully be one of the young doctors as well.
