Football, Effective Altruism, and Lots of Writing

I'm writing this blog in the week that immediately precedes the Harvard-Yale game. Yale has lost been losing this match since 2006, but our team is strong this year.

And I know the rules now, so I might even cheer at the right points of the game! Then again, I'm wearing this t-shirt, so it won't matter all that much.

At Harvard, I'll meet a number of old friends - but also some new ones. Since my friends and I finally got around to getting Yale Effective Altruists off the ground, we’ll attend a mixer with the Harvard EA chapter, of which Aleš Flídr is a co-president. (An article about effective altruism is near-finished on top of my Drafts, but a short description is that we’re trying to figure out how to help the most people with a finite amount of resources. One interesting thing we did in October was The Giving Game, which is a reverse fundraiser aimed at getting future high-earners - read, most Yalies - to think about their charitable giving.)

I’ll hang around Cambridge and Boston for a bit - many friends to catch up with! - but I’ll spend most of my break in New Haven, writing lots of papers. This is because my courses this semester are all final-paper based; what’s more, most of them require original research proposals in psychology, behavioral economics, and decision neuroscience. This is less fun than I imagined at the start of the semester, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.

Random images to illustrate other aspects of my semester so far:

We started a game of Diplomacy. My friends are disturbingly good at stabbing each other’s backs.

At YHack, I teamed up with a couple of Cornellians to create WatchMe4Me, a Pebble/Rails hack.

As always, fall at Yale is beautiful.
