First steps in white coat

Five and a half years or 6 summer and 5 winter semesters – that’s exactly the time I need for getting a degree MUDr (M.D.). As I have said several times, I obviously have a long study period still ahead. However I’m hoping that all next semesters will pass off as the one I just finished, in that case I would have the fastest 5,5 years of my live ahead.

During the winter semester I was studying mainly theoretical basis about the functions an organism – basics of medicine, metabolism and communication on the cellular level. Moreover I visited a little bit less interesting subjects as biophysics and medical terminology. During the biophysics practices I uncovered the uses of devices such as ultrasound, ECG, EEG or X-ray, which I did not know much about..

Finally I wore a white coat, put on a name tag, equipped myself with pen and disinfection and I felt like a doctor. Its worth to mention that before our professors allows us to “play doctors” we had to attend many lectures on the themes as hand hygiene and nosocomial (in hospital acquired) infections. Afterwards we trained methods of the most effective hand washing under control of head nurses. After these necessities we were allowed to visit a department of acute care or inpatient ward of Faculty hospital Královské Vinohrady. First few visits of hospital were more or less amusing – we met mainly with patients, which were ready to leave the hospital.  We only just realized the seriousness of our future profession when we visited an intensive care unit (ICU) it is a specialized section of a hospital that were provided comprehensive and continuous care for persons who are critically ill or in early postoperative state. In this unit I became a witness of a classic medical student story: sterile environment and psychological pressure were probably the main two reasons why one of my classmates fell into a faint.

The most significant advantage of studying university is dividing a school year into two semesters. I was quite lucky this year and I finished all my exams in the first week of exam period. Therefore I got almost a month-long winter holiday, which I really appreciated. After the half year of incessant studying I really needed some free time. From the difficulty of studying point of view I would describe the studying medicine as 3 times more demanding than preparation for IB exams. Mainly because of the time it demands. I have already put up with the fact that I practically don’t have any free time. Fortunately I am still enjoying studying medicine, therefore I’m not missing it, maybe only I would appreciate to have more time for sports, which is a great relax activity. I have to agree with an opinion that physical strain is easier than psychological strain.  For me it is the best way of relaxing is a morning run. When I’m running I can sort out my thoughts and motivate myself simultaneously. Just as I overcome next and next kilometers, I can again and again sit and concentrate on the studying. The motivation is more powerful when a man can create it himself without surrounding impacts. It’s not important to show others that you are the best. A much better feeling is to know that you are doing the best of you.
