First month as an university student

First of October this year, I enthusiastically (as a typical freshmen) went through the gate of Faculty hospital Královské Vinohrady and headed for the building of Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University – since this moment for me started a new and relatively long (Master's degree takes 6 years) period of study at the university.

First of all I have to mention that studying medicine was always one of my biggest dreams – and the following information might be based on my emotions.

I am studying the General Medicine course, which is designed for international students, which means that all lectures are taught in English. I found this to be a great advantage for me. Studying medicine is generally considered as really demanding because languages (exceptions are Greek and Latin) are not included in the curriculum.  I combined both – studying medicine and improving my English. In addition I started learning Norwegian but more on that later. Firstly teachers thought that there has been a mistake and that actually I am a student of the Czech course.  After a few weeks they realized that I am really the only Czech student in the history of faculty who is studying this course in English.

But now briefly on the study – now I understand why everyone keeps on saying that studying medicine is really challenging. It is truth that a man can be in touch with teachers lecture only if he studied all details and deeply understood all previous lectures. In the winter semester I have to pass three important tests for passing into summer semester and my final grade of the first year depends on these tests as well. The first test is finally done! Preparing at this test I did in the same way as studying on IB final exams – understand everything, learn everything. I am so glad that I did whole IB Diploma now – not only that it gives me great knowledge from biology and physics but also it taught me to be persistent in studying.  Because of it I pass the test without any difficulties and even my result was the best one in my class.

Most of my classmates are from Norway. When I heard more Norwegian than English in the break between lectures I realized that I really should start to study Norwegian.  Fortunately, I like it and my new friends motivate me to study it. So when I have (rarely) some free time I study Norwegian, go jogging or go for walk in beautiful Prague centre.

Last of all I would like to mention, that studying medicine is really demanding, but it makes me happy so far – maybe it sounds as cliché, but I know that this is something what I always really wanted to do.
