Endless essays

After I returned home last summer and enjoyed a well-deserved (but rather short) rest, I started my first summer internship at the Regional Authority of the Moravian-Silesian Region. I spent most of the summer working and gaining invaluable experience in the area of international relations outside the academic world.

Also I have managed to pass a driving course and so I officially can drive a car (although I still don’t dare to drive on British roads and I am sure it will take a while before I’ll be able to) and have started volunteering for a Czech NGO Human Rights League, for which I translate materials and documents.

And of course, just like every September of the last sixteen years, I have returned back to studying. Third year has been really intensive so far and after two months it doesn’t look like the pace is to slow down any time soon. Compared to last year essays, reports and reading seem to have no end. Unlike the first two years when the process of assigning and submitting work occurred in waves, this year assessment has been cycled into something not dissimilar to the infinity symbol. That is not to say that I enjoy it any less – on the contrary; the modules finally focus on politics and topics closely related to current international affairs.

The most significant topic this year has certainly been the American presidential election, which have completely absorbed us, students of politics. Discussions, reports and endless speculations about the next American president have been following me in nearly every class and to be honest I cannot wait for the final result. I am equally impatient for the final exams, which have become somewhat of a symbol of the upcoming Christmas break. Now I can only hope for a better timing of snowfall than it was two years ago, when it happened to collide with my flight home.

When my flat mate spotted this pile of books, I brought from the library, she said: „Jolana, you really need to get a life.” Nevertheless the hard work has paid off and I managed to get an A for the essay.
