Done With My First Year!

I cannot even believe that it has already been a year since I came to Grinnell. When I think back to the very beginning of my American adventure a lot changed since then. Being twenty-two years old, I could not imagine that studying at a university could make me more mature, but it actually did. At least in the sense of maturing as a “Grinnellian.”

Studying in the USA is completely different from anything that I was used to in the Czech Republic. Consequently, my first semester at college was the time to explore and especially to learn. I had to figure out how to write well-structured essays, get used to participating in every class, and learn how to use all the available resources for students. Beside the academic side, I also had to learn how to manage my time, so that I was able to complete my academic responsibilities, participate in clubs and organizations, work sufficient amount of hours, and still have some time left to relax and have fun.

The first five months of exploring were extremely rewarding in my second semester. With a clearer idea in mind I was able to truly focus on the academics and activities that fulfilled my desire to be involved outside the curriculum. I decided to truly take an advantage of all the possibilities that I have as a Grinnell student. Throughout my second semester, I founded a cooking club, was elected to the position of International Student Organization president, attended two conferences, joined a service trip, and applied for numerous committees. All the applications got slightly overwhelming at times, but once the decisions were released, I felt the beauty of being rewarded for my hard work.

As of right now, I am enjoying being home for a couple of weeks before I leave for a month-long adventure to Malaysia. After that, I will come back to campus two weeks early to finish training as a student leader and then spend four days helping our new coming international students to adjust to the College life.

Although much has changed since the first time I stepped onto the campus ground, my enthusiasm and very passionate feelings towards Grinnell remained. Although my first year has just ended, I already cannot wait for the next one to start. But until then, I would like to wish all of you a wonderful summer break.
