Culture

I have completed six months of studies at Tilburg University and managed to successfully finish my first semester here. My academic life currently consists of my favorite social psychology, organizational psychology, strategic management and statistics. Recently, a friend informed me that I was entering the third phase of cultural shock. I got used to the culture here in the Netherlands so much that life seems normal to me now. I have a routine, I even rarely complain about the rain and Dutch bread and I surrounded myself with lovely people.

The student associations of which I am a member of make up a great part of my student life. All of my extracurricular activities have recently revolved around the theme of culture. As part of the AEGEE Cultural Exchange Committee, I participate in organizing a student exchange with Sheffield University. At the same time, we are diligently preparing a program for the Zagreb antenna which should come to Tilburg in about a month. Together with the Committee for the International Integration of HR Students, I organized a so-called Huifkar Cantus, during which we sang traditional Dutch songs and by passed Tilburg in a covered wagon. At the moment, my committee is selecting an international company based in the Netherlands whose HR department we would like to visit.

I must admit that I sometimes put too much on my plate. Ever since I've started working for a local inventory firm, my immunity began to weaken. At the moment, I am still recovering from an encounter with a Dutch bacterium streptococcus which surprised me at the worst possible moment. Fortunately, I was able to face both the Dutch health service and the worst tonsilitis of my life with the help of a wonderful lady from the Czech health insurance company. Even though the local streptococcus deprived me of my trip to the Czech Republic, Dutch Carnival, Open Gate graduation ball and a weekend with my family, I am extremely grateful that I am finally healthy. I am hopefully going back home in a month - once I have passed the next exams. After all, realizing that I need to relax is actually a very good lesson to learn.

Even though I had to miss Dutch carnival, I'm looking forward to celebrating Kings day soon. I also cannot wait to see what the upcoming months bring.
