Cold and rainy – welcome to Glasgow again

Nothing really changed since the end of the last academic year – there are almost the same people in the lectures; some of our fellow students did not make it through the final examinations in May, and so there is fewer of us.

The subjects are, of course, a bit difficult (as one might expect from a second year of University), but despite that they are still fairly manageable … so far the University is a relatively useless-stress-free place.

Last year I was accustoming to a new city, and I did not really had a slightest glimpse of thought about being actively involved in any of the societies on the campus. This year is different, and that is why I am in two boards of members – in ASES (Adam Smith Economics Society) and GUES (Glasgow Entrepreneurship Society); I am the IT Consultant in both of them. What does it involve? Tending to the current infrastructure, develop new solutions (e.g. web page) and to give the other board members a new perspective onto the IT aspects of the society. It is not such an important position (after all, the President is more important), but it is more important to a Computing Science student, as the position provides a lot of useful experience for the future. Even though both societies are centred around economics and management, there are many possibilities to get in touch with IT, for example our last guest lecture from Dr. Stephen Davies from IEA (Institute for Economic Affairs), who gave it on the topic of “The Economics of the Future”; and even other events are quite useful to broaden the horizons of the topics which I don’t study.

And we come to the weather, at last. Glaswegian weather has again shown itself in the best light possible – last week the temperatures fell down to 0°C with a cold wind blowing from the sea, and now we have around 12°C and non-stopping rain for the last few days, sprinkled with the amber warning of rain and a possibility of floods. Despite the weather the people (again) don’t lose their spirits, and so it is more than possible to have a coffee with someone right next to a window during a deluge. The conversation topics range from the current weather to where and when it’s the coldest weather. Lately all of those have been ended with an optimistic “Only a month until Christmas, how bad can it get really?” I too do hope in a better weather, but secretly I would love some snow as last year – it was a nice change from all the cold water falling from the sky.

The exams will be in three weeks, so until then all of us try to stay relaxed and enjoy relatively calm first semester while drinking a cup of a hot coffee.
