Alumni

I have recently passed an important milestone in my life. My formal education is over – at least for the foreseeable future. I still cannot get used to the fact that I am no longer a student. I am now a member of the Alumni community, even though I have not graduated yet.

How did the last few weeks go? Fast. I remember that most of the time I was bent over my desk, staring at a monitor, drinking litres of Redbull and coffee and some cola from time to time to dilute the concentration of caffeine. I also remember praying for my computer to last at least until I submit my dissertation. Still, every few hours I uploaded new versions to DropBox and emailed them to myself as well, just to be sure you know. I lost count of the number of versions of my dissertation and it is quite a wonder that I managed to submit the right version on time. Moreover, the same afternoon that I had to submit the presentation I also had a group presentation, so my stress management skills and ability to prioritize were tested. The exam period followed, which was fortunately quite short – two weeks and two exams. And then the long wait for the results.

I used the waiting period quite productively – I went to see my family and friends in Prague and I also got a Czech citizenship. After returning to England, I decided to compensate for the tyranny of my mind and body in the past few months and it seemed that the weather was in favour of the plan as well. Lovely, long-awaited summer came to Exeter and so I often treat myself to nice, long walks and outdoor tennis. I also spend a big part of my days thinking about my future and looking at and applying to graduate jobs.

One month after my final exam (interestingly it fell on Friday the 13th), the university made our final marks available. When I looked at the website, there was good news waiting for me – again, I had an average of over 70% and therefore, later in July, I will graduating with a „BA With Honours in Business and Management with International Study with Proficiency in Spanish Class I“.

Everything feels surreal for now. I expect that I will realize it once I start my first full-time job as a graduate. What is certain is that the last four years have brought me a lot of wonderful memories and that they have had a huge impact on me and my plans for the future. I am extremely grateful to the Foundation for their financial backing which enabled me to fulfil my dream to study at the University of Exeter Business School.
