A stressful summer ushers in a joyful fall

Life is a bit more meaningful if you perceive and live it like a game or competition. I don’t mean anything like the Russian roulette; I mean something more fun like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? I guess we all know that quiz show. A stupid question, isn’t it? Who (other than billionaires) does not want to be a millionaire? But I don’t mean money now – it’s about the principle of the game. If you establish some kind of points of reference, you will reach your desired goal more easily.

I succeeded in establishing one of my points of reference in the morning of September 5. Following four years taking a three-year program (I know, the numbers don’t match, but that’s the way it is) I passed the final exams and got my ‘Bc’, or bachelor’s degree. I jumped up a notch from the Czech school-leaving exam. It’s obvious why it’s a sort of a point of reference for me – whatever happens in the future, nobody can take the degree away from me. Nobody will fuss about the fact that I had to repeat my first year for psychological reasons. Nobody will fuss about the fact that I only took the final exams in September because I submitted my bachelor’s thesis late. The result matters – that’s what it’s all about.

Even though I am not an ambitious person, a bachelor’s degree is not enough for me. I had an opportunity to study on, so I took it. I enrolled in a master’s program in Social and Media Communication. My next point of reference is therefore clear – getting the master’s degree. There’s one step in between, though, and that’s getting a driver’s license. I started my driving course in the summer and am slowly approaching the finish line. I will take my tests in December and then, hopefully, will join the ranks of ‘Category B’ drivers.

It was not an easy summer. There was a lot of learning under relentless stress: The final exams, the fear of failure, the driving lessons, and the stress from driving in real traffic. I didn’t exactly enjoy my summer holidays, but the result is worth it. There are a few weeks left before New Year’s Eve, but I can already say that 2016 has been one of the most successful years of my life.

In the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire TV show, contestants can choose from several types of clues that can help them progress a little. I too have helpers without whom I could not have gotten this far. The Olomouc Children’s Home will always offer help and counsel when I am at a loss. The Kellner Family Foundation supports my academic dreams and desires financially. My family, friends… they all recharge me with energy and give me the optimism I need. I owe them all many thanks for that.

It’s unbelievable how fast the time is flying by. The winter semester will end in one month, and once I have passed my exams, one-quarter of my master’s program will be over. It’s about time to start thinking about the topic for my thesis. I genuinely hate this because choosing the right topic is no easy task. But I do have an idea – I want to write about the semiotics of signs in soccer matches. I will discuss this with my teachers, and hopefully we will reach an agreement. At any rate, my thesis should again be about sports, which is what I want to focus on in the future.

I wish all my readers a Merry Christmas, a peaceful holiday season and a successful start to 2017.
