12 May

“12 May, it is tomorrow.” This sentence has been told to us by the thesis’ supervisor. 12 May is in fact the thesis deadline. Since then, jokes on the 12th of May were made and we didn’t say hi to each other without adding “So what are you going to do on the 12th of May?” Even though it is only February, we don’t pronounce this date out loud anymore because it really looks like it is “tomorrow”.

We have created a Facebook group where we support each other while writing this half academic and half bureaucratic work so we could all comfortably finish before the end of April. I say bureaucratic simply for that reason that bureaucracy (As already mentioned several times on my blog) has unfortunately came to this type of work as well. During writing the thesis we have to fill in all kinds of forms and turn them into the students’ services. And so each one of us is writing, filling in the forms, collecting stamps and we are all looking for the “tomorrow” when it is all going to be over.

Because my studies won’t last more than few weeks anymore, I have to decide what will be my future steps. In the Czech Republic, I would hear most likely about masters’ studies as about my one and only option. However, here it is a bit different. The school sends us e-mails very often about not going to do masters just to have a master degree. The university tells that if we are not sure about what we want to do in the future, we should allow one or two years for us to decide about which master will be the best for us. Bachelor’s degree abroad is in fact enough for finding a job and I would say that it is an equivalent to the Czech Master’s degree. Further studies are taken here more like specialising, which will make it easier for one to start a new job without having to learn so much at the beginning. And so that is a reason why I have decided to find myself a job, thanks to which I hope  I will find out what I really like and what I really want to do in the future.

However, in between writing my thesis, studying and trying to find a good job, we still have time for our students’ life. And so we are enjoying the city of Reims together, we meet for breakfasts and for dinners and we talk about what we have achieved until now, we exchange our experience from job interviews and we celebrates the success of others.

Therefore, while I will be trying to decide about my future and while I will hope that I will achieve to defend my thesis, I will also enjoy my last three months of studying abroad in different students’ associations. And why? Because even after four years nothing has changed about the British saying that “If the degree is the only thing which a University gave to you, the university has failed”.
