What I’m working on

It’s getting close to March of my final year at De Montfort University, which basically means two things: 1. it‘s less than three months to our final deadline, 2. all game artists are fanatically looking for work and internships. My day-to-day right now mainly consists of me being submerged in the mayhem of both, trying to reach the best possible outcome for my future.

Luckily, as it’s our final year, we were allowed to choose our own projects and propose our own brief (a summary of topics, instructions and requirements serving as a basis for the teachers to evaluate our projects on), which helps me out a ton in the job-searching process - one of the main tips recruiters keep pointing out is to create a portfolio with a clear focus on what you want to work on (for example, if you want to create characters or environments for games), what style you want to work on (e.g. realistic vs. stylized), or even which company you want to work for (if you know that already): different companies‘ games looks can differ even if they are made in the same style; for instance, there is a clear difference between the vivid colours and historical designs of Assassin's Creed and dark, gothic designs of games like Dark Souls, although both are made in a realistic style.

And I do my best to follow these tips when working on my projects. Almost three years of trying out all possible styles and workflows allowed me to make it clear to myself, that I wanted my focus to be stylized characters. Since the vast majority of my work is visual, rather than try to clumsily, wordily describe what I'm working on, I'll resort to adding some pictures of my recent project:

In short, it’s a 3D model of a fan skin (an optional purchasable appearance/costume for the character in the game) of Kled and his trusty blue steed Skaarl from my favourite game League of Legends, which I’ve been playing for around 7 years. The look is definitely not final yet - there are still a lot of things I have to fine-tune, but I was lucky to receive some great feedback from amazing 3D artists working in this style, which definitely does make the process easier.

I’m glad that I can finally work on something I really love, and I’m working hard to be able to continue this after graduation. I don’t want to Jinx anything until it’s set in stone – but hopefully I can write more about it in my next blog :)
