Welcome to Grammar School Again

Education is considered a straight forward process of learning and acquiring skills. However, what I am experiencing now is a return to the school. Basically, Imperial College London turned out to be my other grammar school.

Generally, the school is the first educational experience for children. They meet peers who have the same educational goals, although their skills vary a lot. In addition, everyone comes from a different family, from different environment, but they all have one interest in common, the curiosity about learning new things and exploring our world. Such an environment is likely to become stressful because students experience new subjects, different expectations and possibility of failure, which is natural. Studying university is a similar transfer like entering grammar school.

At Imperial College London it works exactly the same. Students are sharing the passion for learning about sciences, exploring a world of top class research and preparing to take their place in it. However, at Imperial College London students are exposed to this environment without any previous experience, exactly like children at entering school. The only significant difference is that my peers are the best students from all over the world.

So here I am, learning how to live in London in same manner a small child learns the way to school and home. Fortunately, as a child at Imperial I have been assigned an academic parents who help me like my real parents helped me at the age of 6. In addition, I have a few siblings studying Physics as well. Thanks to that my “family” has its roots in India, UK, France and Czech Republic. I couldn’t ever imagine how fast I can expand my relatives.

As far as London and extracurricular activities are concerned, I have never seen so many opportunities to do exciting things in my life. For example, I have taken up shooting, which I always felt passionate about. Generally in London everything is possible. For example, the shooting sessions are held at a range in London Bridge, literally. In addition, I carry on doing Taekwondo. However, I regret I do not play music instrument here. Overall, during the presentations of more than 340 clubs and societies at Imperial College London, every fresher feels like Alice in Wonderland.

Never before had I experienced such a social environment of, on one hand, such similar and curious mates, and on the other hand, such a different academic environment as this. I doubt I could ever experience it while studying in the Czech Republic.
