The aim of the course is to teach all yachting theory necessary for Day Skipper yachting certification in several weekends. Successful candidates will, therefore, have the theoretical part of the Day Skipper exam completed. The course is exciting. Our lecturer is a well experienced sailor with more than 30 years of experience. What I am fascinated most about is how detailed, rigorous and fair the course is.
Firstly, the course is very detailed. On the first day I realized how demanding and high-level the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualification is, even just the Day Skipper. This has several reasons. Most importantly, RYA teachings are aggregating hundreds of years of sailing experience of one of the greatest sailing nations in the world. Consequent, I learn considerable details about history of sailing and how it formed the rules and habits we use nowadays. Day Skipper course is demanding. RYA is a very prestigious British organization which is very well known for training great, professional and well-skilled sailors. RYA has built this reputation over decades. The demands are high so that every successful candidate would meet these expectations.
But what I found fascinating the most is the fair approach. RYA is considered a form of international sailing standards and RYA also operates in other countries of Commonwealth. Consequently, candidates may be from different countries and may be familiar with different areas. RYA secures a fair approach to every candidate by solely using fictional maps, almanacs and boat specifications for teaching and examining. This is the only fair way how all candidates can demonstrate their skills in completely new environment and meet the RYA requirements. Learning about yachting also involves learning about the culture which is very enriching experience.
