Student conference

A couple of weeks ago the first student-led Economics conference took place at the University of Edinburgh and I had the privilege of co-organising it. At first glance it may look all fun and all, but the amount of work our team put in since August calling speakers, booking venues, finding sponsors or even persuading student speakers to take the floor and spend a couple of minutes talking about fields of work they are passionate about, was commendable.

At the end the conference was short, yet very successful. We had the opportunity to hear people from diverse backgrounds. From the chairman of the London Stock Exchange to a student interested in the impact of artificial intelligence and automation on international labour markets. Whilst it may seem that economics students spend most of their free time pondering on the significance of changes in European fiscal policies or about Brexit, opportunities when we can share ideas amongst ourselves along with experts in their fields are scarce.

I am very grateful to the University and the School of Economics for their support and trust in our team and am looking forward to next year. Organising a similar even with a group of hard-headed students may prove to be quite challenging. On the other hand, it can also be very rewarding and I very much recommend people interested in organising an event at their university to go for it. One may meet a lot of interesting people along the way.
