Second Time Around

Second semester flew by faster than one could expect and now, along with other second year students reading economics, I am able to choose from a wide array of subjects my further academic specialisation.

While many opt for the more traditional courses such as accounting, finance or business, I am taking a rather more scientific path by studying algebra, basics of informatics and medicine and statistics. Thus I am able to complement the skills I gained during my summer internship in a hospital. I further try to develop my understanding of the workings of healthcare through the Global Health Society at the University.

Its main goal is not merely to inform students about minor, local issues in healthcare, but also to present more complex issues which are often being dealt with by major MNCs or governments. Students are thus enabled to have a greater platform to share informations and inferences and this way try to find solutions or at least partial resolutions to pressing situations presented during meetings. As an economics student I can thus develop my humble understandings of green and development economy I am currently very intrigued by.

I spend my free time doing activities I would hardly have the chance to practice outside the university campus. Not being brave enough to skydive, to cuddle with a python (except when it comes to the one on my computer) or to surf in the North Sea, I find different ways to stay busy and entertained. I have to admit that tango lessons along with Modern Pentathlon trainings have kept me on my feet for the better part of the semester. I also spend time teaching Portuguese and sometimes take the advantage to play the piano in some of the University’s common rooms.

The second year at the university is in many ways a lot like the first one. Just like last year I have a great set of optional subjects to chose from, people are as kind as ever and for the second time in a row Edinburgh has become the best place to live in the entire Kingdom. My experience is even better this year, as it is not as hard to pass through a crowd of people on the streets, easier to talk to professors about interesting publications or scientific endeavors after lectures and finally being able to focus more on a more narrowed field of study and research brings me all the more motivation and joy.
