Reflections

The lecturer for one of the subjects - Leadership and Teams to be specific - was adamant that we keep a notepad and take notes on our experiences. The goal is to have all your ideas and observations on hand and well organized. This makes learning from your mistakes and avoiding them easier. And you get to realize which tactics work best in specific situations. Simply put, you see what works and what’s just a waste of your and others’ time.

I am glad that I have filled many pages in my time here. It’s amazing how many things you forget and how memories can get muddled over time. Which is why it’s great to look back every once in a while – like when your first year in university is just ending – and think about what you have accomplished, what you want to achieve in the future and what you want to avoid. Trying to sum up my notes that way, this is what I got:

What have I accomplished?

  • I achieved great academic results in my subjects, averaging “A” – the best grade possible.

  • I found new, very good friends. I met inspiring teachers and students.

  • I got to learn about not only English culture.

  • I learned many new things and improved my skills.

  • I determined my priorities and then adhered to them.

What do I want to avoid?

  • Wasting time.

  • Wasted opportunities.

  • Working with lazy and demotivating people. If this cannot be avoided, I want to have patience and energy enough to neutralize such character traits.

What do I want to achieve?

  • Continue all my achievements and extend this list.

  • Prosperity.

  • Make a more detailed sketch of my future career. Plan ahead, yet be prepared for every eventuality. Keep a sound perspective in all situations.

  • Succeed in pursuing all projects that I’m involved in.

  • Travel more – this year, I managed Bristol and London (on my way to the Czech Republic), and more recently Exmouth and Bath.

I can honestly say that my stay in Exeter has helped me a lot so far. It gave me an opportunity to start all over – to reassess my priorities and interests, and modify them as the case may be. I was capable of that, as the university setting offers a great deal of freedom – but let’s not forget that a great deal of responsibility goes with that. This is where you have to be careful – time is scarce and every step is important. In addition, I personally have benefited from the fact that Exeter is a small and very nice town. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed, yet also very inspiring and motivating here. It’s an ideal place for contemplation, planning and, thanks to the friendly and supportive vibe, for implementation as well. I sincerely recommend everyone courageous enough to leave their home country to study in England, and at the University of Exeter in particular.

In conclusion, I would like to once again thank The Kellner Family Foundation for its support in the previous year and for the support promised for the next year. I am really grateful for the Foundation’s decision to support me next year as well, and I believe I will not disappoint.
