Online education, plants and other joys

Sometimes I think of how many activities I could do in Tilburg last year, how it seemed normal to spend a weekend in Brussels, to invite five friends to dinner or go to a yoga class. My interests had to change a lot. It’s true that since I cannot go on trips to Belgium, I have a lot of time to get used to the online education. I also became interested in growing plants, I started learning Dutch and I am working on my Croatian. I often go bouldering now and I have planned my exchange for next year. I want to tell you all about it today.

I must say I really praise the subjects in the sophomore year. For example, I never expected the subject Philosophy of Science to help me understand how scientific research works in the social sciences in such a depth. I must admit that now the Causal Analysis Techniques are not giving me the easiest time, but I'm determined to not give up.

Regarding the plants, it all started in March. At the time, the transition to online education seemed like a temporary solution at first, which lead me to buying a small number of plants. However, when I learned that my whole second year will really take place in one room, I didn't hesitate and bought a "couple". That was just the beginning. Now that I look around the room between Strategic HRM and Cause Analysis Techniques lectures, I see over twenty plants. Recently a Facebook group for Tilburg (and Dutch-speaking) plants enthusiasts popped up in my recommendations, so now I enrich myself with both plants and Dutch terms such as "cutting".

I've also started to work on my Dutch in recent months. The whole first year was me answering "no, thank you, I don't want a receipt“, and I figured it is about the time to learn more. I can now ask you in Dutch how you feel and order a (takeout) matcha with oat milk without any hesitations. So far, these skills have been all I‘ve needed. I also started improving my Croatian. Lately, I spend my free time at the bouldering centre because the it is perhaps the last thing left open.

Last but not least, I am also busy thinking about how I would like to spend first semester in the third year. We have to pick from the following: internship, a minor or an exchange. But as you might have assumed, it is really difficult to plan anything during a pandemic. I’ve sent off a plan for an Erasmus exchange, but I'll see where the next year takes
